Cannon Captures Sixth Tarheel Tour Victory of the Season
CONCORD, N.C. -- Matt Cannon continued his winning ways on the Tarheel Tour with an easy seven-shot victory Wednesday in the Cabarrus Open at Cabarrus Country Club.
Cannon shot 71 in the final round to pick up the $5,000 first-place check with an 11-under-par total of 205. Cannon has won six of the tour's 13 tournaments this season, including three of the last four. His $39,156.24 in winnings is more than double that of his nearest competitor.
Cannon was officially named the winner after Wednesday's final round, but he actually locked up the tourney with a stellar 65 in Tuesday's second round. He entered the final round with a comfortable eight-shot lead and won by seven despite a double-bogey on the last hole.
"I played well all week until the last hole," Cannon said afterward. "Yesterday, I hit the ball very good. I had seven birdies and an eagle and that set me up for the win. Today, it was just play safe, hit the middle of the greens and don't make any big numbers."
Cannon avoided the high rough that kept the rest of the field in check. Only 10 of 26 golfers who made the cut were below par. Laurinburg's Frank Adams III closed with an impressive 68 to vault from seventh place into second at 212 and earn $3,000. David Sanchez of Pinehurst and Tommy Gainey of Bishopville, S.C., also made strong runs, shooting 68 and 69 respectively to tie for third at 213. They each won $1,750.
This week's field included the second-place money winner this year on the Gateway Tour at Myrtle Beach, Tommy Gainey ($85,891.33), and the third-place money winner on this year's Canadian Tour, Chris Wisler ($65,165). Also in the field was Chip Spratlin, who won the 1995 NCAA individual national championship while at Auburn.
Next stop on the Tarheel Tour is the Statesville Open, Sept. 27-29 at Statesville Country Club in Statesville, N.C.
