Sanchez
A Bridesmaid No More!
CONCORD, N.C. –.
Pinehurst’s David Sanchez finally broke through for his first Tarheel
Tour victory at the Cabarrus Open on Thursday. Sanchez, a Charlotte native, shot
a final round 66 in wind conditions more native to Scotland than Concord.
Long regarded as one of the best players on Tour not to have won, Sanchez
said he tried not to think of that on the back nine: “I didn’t look at the
scoreboard all day. I really just wanted to treat it like a normal round.” The
former Wolfpack star was in or around the lead all day, but when a devilish 40
foot birdie putt dropped on 17, he knew he had the cushion he needed going to
the last.
“It’s just a great feeling of relief to finally win out here and know
that I can bring my best stuff in the final round,” said Sanchez, who will
enter the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School in three weeks.
Former Nationwide Tour player Tommy Biershenk finished solo second after
an impressive final round 66. Douglas Fiese picked up $3000 for finishing third
at 10 under par 206, while fourth place was shared by Aaron Black and Kyle
Bradley.
Second round co-leader Tommy Tolles let the tournament slide away with a
back nine 39. Tolles, a former standout on the PGA Tour, said he is using the
Tarheel Tour in order to prepare for the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying
School, for which he is exempt. “If you don’t have status on the PGA or
Nationwide Tours, this is the Tour to play,” said Tolles just before leaving
for his home in Flat Rock, NC.
The tour would like to thank the members of Cabarrus Country Club, as
well as Head Pro Ken Guilford and Superintendent Tim Davis and their respective
staffs for putting on such a great event.
The Tarheel Tour visits venerable Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro,
NC next week for the inaugural Big Stakes Classic.
