McGirt Wins at Cabarrus

Concord, NC- William McGirt made a five foot birdie putt to beat Rohan Allwood on the first playoff hole in the Tarheel Tour’s Cabarrus Classic on Friday.

McGirt began the day tied for the lead with Pinehurst’s Andy Bare at nine under par, but quickly fell behind Australian Rohan Allwood who came flying out of the gates with birdies on three of his first four holes. It was a lead that Allwood held until McGirt made a clutch 12 footer for par on the 18th hole to force the playoff.

“The key for me was that I one putted the last seven holes. I’ve been a bridesmaid out here so many times because my putter has let me down. It just feels great to win this tournament on the strength of my putter,” said the Boiling Springs, SC native. McGirt’s win ends the victory drought for the longtime Tarheel Tour veteran who now has four top six finishes on the Tarheel Tour this season. The win was worth $16,000 and vaults McGirt to the top of the 2007 money list with $27,150 in total earnings through six events.

“This is the biggest tournament I have ever won, against the best field that I have ever played against,” McGirt said in reference to the record setting 149-player field. “To beat players of this caliber is a validation of all of the swing changes and hard work I have put into improving my game.”

Although he didn’t win the tournament, Allwood’s second place finish was his best on the Tarheel Tour and netted him a consolation prize of $10,000. Finishing one shot out of the playoff at nine under par was Andy Bare who barely missed joining the playoff when his 20-foot putt for birdie on the long 18th slid past the hole. For Bare it was his third consecutive third place finish, a stretch in which he has shot nine consecutive rounds of even par or better.

Former PGA Tour player Matt Davidson who battled the wind and rain to shoot a five under par round of 67 posted the round of the day. Davidson’s strong play vaulted him up the leader board and into a fourth place finish worth $5000.

The tour would like to offer a big thank you to Ken Guilford and the entire Cabarrus Country Club staff for once again hosting a great event. The tour would also like to thank golf course superintendent Tim Davis for providing the tour with a well-conditioned and well-marked layout that continues to earn praise from the players. The next stop on the Tarheel Tour is at Sapona Country Club, May 9-11.
