REIFERS
WINS IN PRO DEBUT!
INDIAN
TRAIL, N.C. – Former Wake Forest “All American” Kyle Reifers
shot a course record tying round of 64 in the Charlotte National Open to claim
his first pro title in his first pro event.
Reifers,
who originally hails from Dublin, OH, began his round on the back nine and got
off to a quick start with a birdie at the par-4 10th followed later
by an eagle at the par-5 13th. He would go on to add five more
birdies to his card and would later sit by the clubhouse to see if his number
was good enough. Turns out the Demon Deacon did just enough to get the job done.
“I
knew there were going to be some low scores today, so I just wanted to keep
making birdies and make sure I didn’t get comfortable,” said Reifers, who
competed for the United States in the 2005 Walker Cup.
“I
lost the ACC Championship by one shot and missed the U.S. Open by one shot, so I
was not about to sit back and wait for other guys to make mistakes. I really
wanted to get off to a good start and go as low as I could.”
Second
place was shared by tour regulars Derek Watson and Chris Mundorf. Watson managed
to tie the course record as well with his own round of 64, while Mundorf’s
round of 65 moved him up the leader board in the final round.
Fourth
place went to two time Tarheel Tour winner Dustin Bray of Asheboro, NC. Bray,
who shared the first round lead, carded a second round 68 to notch yet another
top five finish in what has been an impressive 2006 season.
Adam
Gary, Andy Crain, and Fernando Mechereffe all finished at nine under par 135,
good enough to share fifth place. Mechereffe threw his name into the course
record hat with an outstanding 64 of his own. The Brazilian had the solo course
record in his sights, but a late bogey on the par-4 8th, his 17th
hole of the day, would end his chances. Crain, who is best known for his
signature waggles and use of the word “dude”, managed a final round 67 to
record his best finish of the year.
The
tour would like to thank Director of Golf Dave Moore, Head Golf Professional
Robbie Isenhour, and their staff for all of their help in running this event.
The tour would also like to thank Head Golf Course Superintendent Mike Thompson
and his respective staff for getting the golf course in immaculate condition
after heavy rains earlier in the week.
The Tarheel Tour will take next week off before heading to Concord, NC for the
Rocky River Classic on June 27-29.
