Herberth Fires Record-Breaking 61 to Grab Tarheel Tour Lead
5/5/2004   By Craig Distl
CHARLOTTE -- Erik Herberth of Avon Lake, Ohio, fired a course-record and tour-record 61 Wednesday in the second round Tarheel Tour's Emerald Lake Classic at the par-71 Emerald Lake Golf Club.
Herberth, who played collegiately at Ohio University, rocketed to the top of the leader board with a two-day total of 11-under 131. He shattered the previous course record of 66 shot during a Hooters Tour event, and bested the all-time Tarheel Tour record of 63 shared by Courtney Brisson at The Tradition and Derek Watson at Birkdale.
Herberth made the turn at four-under and had an amazing back nine that included two eagles, four birdies and one bogey. He holed his second shot for eagle on the par-4 11th, made another eagle on the par-5 14th, and chipped in for birdie on the par-3 16th.
Chasing Herberth is former UNC Charlotte golfer Jeff Curl of Jupiter, Fla. Curl birdied the final hole to shoot 66 Wednesday to go along with a first-round 67 that leaves him two shots back at 133. Steve Voinovich of Cleveland, Ohio, is alone in third at 135.
The field was trimmed from 72 to 26 for Thursday's final round, which begins at 9 a.m. Twenty-one golfers remaining in the field are at par or better.
