Siegel Birdies Three of Last Four to Win Tarheel Tour's Kannapolis Invitational
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- David Siegel of Charlotte surged past Laurinburg's Frank Adams III during the final three holes Thursday to pick up the $5,000 first-place check in the Tarheel Tour's Kannapolis Invitational at Kannapolis Country Club.
Siegel and Adams began the round tied and were still knotted after a pair of birdies on the 15th hole. However, Siegel took control on the par-4 16th by hitting his approach shot to six feet and making birdie, while Adams' tee shot found the rough and he made double bogey.
Siegel went on to sink a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th to shoot 66 and finish at 14-under 202. Adams closed with a 70 to finish second at 206 and earn $3,000.
"Frank has won three times on this tour and he's a very good player. I knew if I was going to have a chance to win, I had to play well today," said Siegel, who picked up his fourth career Tarheel Tour victory. "It wasn't the best ball-striking week I've had, but it was by far my best putting week. I did not have a three-putt all week."
With a three-under 69, Huntersville's Matt Cannon took third place at 209 and won $2,000, while a pair of former UNC Charlotte golfers, Stewart Moore and Russell Killough, tied for fourth at 210 and earned $1,400 apiece.
Course conditions were excellent at Kannapolis Country Club, and the players took advantage. Of the 22 golfers who made the cut, 21 of them finished the tourney at even par or better.
The Tarheel Tour is off next week before returning Aug. 17-19 with the Statesville Classic at Statesville Country Club.
