Robinson’s steady play earns second
title of season
Huntersville, NC- Sandersville,
GA native David Robinson made pars on his final six holes to fire a final round
2-under-par 70 and win the Tarheel Tour’s Northstone Open, and the first place
check of $18,500.
Robinson held a share of the lead going into the final
round but bogeyed the 473-yard fourth hole to fall off the lead.
Mt. Pleasant, SC resident Brian Duncan assumed the lead when he birdied
the 9th hole to go out in 33 and climb to 11-under for the
tournament. Robinson, who also won
the Rivertowne Open in March, birdied the 8th, 11th, and
12th holes to regain the lead at 12-under.
Robinson’s playing partners, Matt Mincer and Andy Bare fell out of
contention early on the back nine and were no longer a factor. Both finished at
7-under and tied for 14th. Duncan,
playing in the group ahead of Robinson, continued his charge by birdieing 13,
15, and 16 to reach 14-under for the tournament to take a two-stroke lead over
Robinson heading to the watery par-3 17th. Duncan’s tee shot
settled in the rough between the greenside bunker and the green, leading to a
five-footer for par that slid past the hole leaving the former Clemson Tiger
with one shot lead heading to the final hole. On the 18th hole Duncan
hit a loose tee shot into the lateral hazard on 18 and the result was a closing
double-bogey leaving Duncan in the clubhouse at 11-under par.
Robinson played the 18th hole thinking he needed
a birdie to force a playoff but his 7-iron from 165 yards was a bit wide to the
right leaving him a 45-foot downhill hooking putt. When Robinson arrived at the final green he saw on the
scoreboard that Duncan had actually finished at 11-under and not 13-under as it
appeared. From there, the former
Georgia College standout hit a tremendous putt that finished just a foot below
the hole enabling him to secure his sixth consecutive par and the win.
“I got lucky. I played
real solid but I thought I still needed a birdie at 18 to force a playoff.
I’ve been on the other side of it before and this time I was very
fortunate to win,” said Robinson.
Robinson’s victory was his second in four events on the
Tarheel Tour this season and the $18,500 he collected moved him to the top of
the 2008 money list with total earnings of $47,750.
Duncan finished alone in second place and earned $9,500, which is his largest check of the season to date, and is his best finish on the Tarheel Tour. Two other players made significant moves up the leaderboard to finish tied for third. Huntersville resident and Tarheel Tour all-time leading money leader Matt Cannon birdied the final hole to fire a 5-under-par 67 and finish at 10-under. He shared third place with Bluffton, SC resident Cory Kaufman who fired a 4-under-par 68 in the final round. Each player earned $6,500 for the week. The low round of the day belonged to Boiling Springs, SC native Tommy Biershenk who parlayed his final round 66 into a tie for fifth place and $4400.
The Tarheel Tour staff would like to thank Northstone Country Club
Director of Golf Courtney Ford, golf course superintendent Darrin Spierings, and
their staffs for hosting a great tournament on a well-maintained golf course.
The Tarheel Tour is off next week but returns to action in two weeks for one of
the most anticipated trips of the season to the Walnut Creek Classic in
Goldsboro, NC. Last season, the
Tarheel Tour made two visits to Walnut Creek Country Club for the inaugural
Walnut Creek Classic, won by Jay McLuen, and for the season ending Tour
Championship won by Richard Scott. Both
are expected to be in the field this year along with Robinson.
The Tarheel Tour will host 20 tournaments in 2008 from Hilton Head, SC to
Charlottesville, VA and all points in between.
