$30,000 WINNER’S CHECK WELCOMES KYLE DOBBS BACK TO PROFESSIONAL GOLF 

Okatie, SC – Kyle Dobbs of Tequesta, FL spent the better part of the last 365 days rehabbing a back injury that occurred while he was changing a light bulb. Dobbs was able to put aside any pain for the last 18 holes of the FairwayStyles.com Open and card a course-record-setting 8-under 64 to claim his first eGolf Tarheel Tour event in his triumphant return to professional golf.

            Dobbs, who originally hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan, began the final round trailing overnight leader Blake Adams by five shots, but quickly made up ground at Oldfield Country Club.

            “I hit a decent wedge on two, fatted one on three and then slipped one in (for eagle) from 40 feet on four, so that got me thinking,” said Dobbs. “Maybe if I got it to a couple under and the guys in the lead back up, you never know – but I never thought of anything like this.”

            Neither did the rest of the field.

            While Dobbs was making the Greg Norman design look docile, the leaders were moving backwards quickly. Adams made the turn at 1-under 35, but bogeyed Nos. 10 and 12 and was unable to get back on track.

            First-round co-leader David Sanchez, playing in the final pairing with Adams, suffered a double-bogey at the par-3 seventh and fell out of contention with Dobbs on fire.

            Dobbs turned at 6-under 30 and quickly birdied Nos. 10 and 11 before a stretch of pars ended with a birdie at the par-3 16th, thanks in part to a holed greenside bunker shot. A bogey at the par-4 17th dropped him back to 11-under for the event, which is where he would finish after a routine par at 18.

            When he arrived at the scoring tent, Dobbs was informed that he had essentially already won as the groups behind him were posing little threat. A sense of accomplishment was overshadowed by a look of relief as the South Florida resident realized his comeback was well under way.

            After the accident, Dobbs tried to heal quickly, but seemed to go backwards as opposed to forwards.

            “I took two weeks off and tried to come back – that didn’t work. I took another two weeks off and that didn’t work. I was in so much pain, I just started physical therapy.”

            Dobbs said he has had a vertebrae out of place for most of his life, and that back pain has become more a part of his daily routine than he would ever like for it to be.

            “It’s a day-by-day, week-by-week type of thing. As long as I stay strong and stretched, things should be alright.”

            One year of physical therapy, mixed with a steady dose of stretching and fitness, has allowed Dobbs to leap to the top of the eGolf Tarheel Tour money list with $30,000 for his win today. A 2009 member of the Tour, Dobbs is also leading the money list for the BMW Charity Pro-Am Exemption, which will be awarded after the Snap Fitness Open in May.

            Sanchez, Adams, Matt Davidson and local favorite Chris Baker each tied for second and earned $13,250 for their efforts.

            The tour would like to thank Oldfield PGA Professional Jon Hundley and his staff for hosting a successful eGolf Tarheel Tour event for a fourth consecutive year. Golf Course Superintendent Scott Martin and his staff did another wonderful job of putting Oldfield in excellent shape for the tour.

            The tour would also like to thank Tradition National Golf Club’s Director of Golf, David Wilding, and his team for serving as fantastic hosts of their first tour event. A special thanks goes to Golf Course Superintendent Rich Maxfield and his crew for presenting a great venue in Tradition National.

            The eGolf Tarheel Tour moves from the Lowcountry to the Southern Pines region of North Carolina next week for the Pine Needles Classic on March 18-20.
