Crusaders Win Rain-Shortened Checkered Flag Shootout
CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 17) -- Belmont Abbey grabbed the first-round lead and was declared the champion after heavy rains washed out the final round of the Checkered Flag Shootout at Rocky River Golf Club.
The Crusaders posted a team total of 298, good for a one-shot win over Carson-Newman. Lenoir-Rhyne finished third at 303.
A balanced attack fueled the victory against an 18-team field. Freshman Chris Baron shot 73, junior Mads Nielsen shot 74, junior Matt Chidester had 75 and senior Kasey Timms shot 76.
Baron finished sixth, Nielsen tied for seventh, Chidester tied for 12th and Timms shared 16th place.
It was the Abbey's first win of the fall season.
Belmont Abbey also fielded a 'B' team, which shot 318 and tied for 10th. Freshman Joe Campbell shot 77 for 'B' team to tie for 23rd, while sophomore Justin Wong shot 79 and tied for 35th.
