The Pinehurst Resort has hosted innumerable men's championships on the famed No. 2 course, most recently the 1999 and 2005 US Men's Open Championship. And a nearby Pine Needles Resort, the 2007 US Women's Open Championship will be contested following successful Us Women's Open championships hosted there in 1996 and 2001.  And the terms Pinehurst and Championship golf extends throughout the Pinehurst / Sandhills area, with various minor championships being hosted at many of the 30+ courses in the area.
